[...] In a post on February 13th, 2007 I said the following: arnezami claims to have found it [the “processing key” used to decrypt the DRM on all HD DVD and Blu-Ray Disc films] by simply watching his computer memory, where the secret code simply appeared. So if the code is sitting there in memory, does this even count as a “Hack”? [...]

johnnypeepers,
Sufficiently advanced satire is indistinguishable from reality.

Your comments are always welcome, thought provoking and fun.

This subject actually goes far beyond environmental issues alone. Advocates for effective and real change in human impact on the environment need to understand that we're all in this together, and we can only alter our energy consumption behavior by detaching ourselves from preconceived notions, prejudices, and to a large degree our politics.

I don't think anyone wants us as a species to drown ourselves in our own waste, but the proposed solutions shouldn't be worse for mankind than the problems we're trying to solve.

I have changed my earlier position on climate change. After an exhaustive study of the matter, I concur with you. The founder of GreenPeace acknowledges that when Communism fell, thousands flocked to the environmental movement. It is a diabolical plan to restrain the resources of the West and force us into one world government. Ask yourself, who benefits from this myth? The elites who will harness the World's resources for their own nefarious ends.

Thanks for the link, 4u3u.

It will be interesting to see how much functionality is left after MS is done incorporating the product into Windows 2008 and Vista.

The question about the term "Sunsetted" was intended to be rhetorical. The use of the term "Sunsetted" strikes me as simply another example of Microsoft's marketing "buzzword bingo" words.

What MS really meant is that the standalone PolicyMaker product was "discontinued". I would prefer that computer hardware and software vendors would refrain from such nonsense "marketing speak".

In a site I read that nano black hole after creating evaporates rapidly.i.e.it forms then disappears very quickly.May be nano black holes(like some spacial large black hole)have swirl shape and after contacting with any surface or substance they disappear. So I think you can keep or suspend them amid a powerful magnetic field because this swirl turns and has magnetic property. In the same site I read that these nano particles in near distances can change surface of substances,so change worthless matter to useful one.

...
In Turing Test Two, two players A and B are again being questioned by a human interrogator C. Before A gave out his answer (labeled as aa) to a question, he would also be required to guess how the other player B will answer the same question and this guess is labeled as ab. Similarly B will give her answer (labeled as bb) and her guess of A's answer, ba. The answers aa and ba will be grouped together as group a and similarly bb and ab will be grouped together as group b. The interrogator will be given first the answers as two separate groups and with only the group label (a and b) and without the individual labels (aa, ab, ba and bb). If C cannot tell correctly which of the aa and ba is from player A and which is from player B, B will get a score of one. If C cannot tell which of the bb and ab is from player B and which is from player A, A will get a score of one. All answers (with the individual labels) are then made available to all parties (A, B and C) and then the game continues. At the end of the game, the player who scored more is considered had won the game and is more "intelligent".

brewski, you're missing the point.

The news here is that over 400 distinguished scientists have expressed a dissenting view of the climate data to that which you so generously provided above.

The existence of this much scientific dissent indicates that the so-called "consensus" about AGW does not in fact exist.

For if there exists significant "dissent" then there can by definition be no "consensus", can there?

I will concede one point that you seem to make, in that the science should come before the politics.

Specifically, the "consensus" about anthropogenic climate change entails the following:

1) the climate is undergoing a pronounced warming trend beyond the range of natural variability;
2) the major cause of most of the observed warming is rising levels of the greenhouse gas CO2;
3) the rise in CO2 is the result of burning fossil fuels;
4) if CO2 continues to rise over the next century, the warming will continue; and
5) a climate change of the projected magnitude over this time frame represents potential danger to human welfare and the environment.

These conclusions have been explicitly endorsed by ...

Academia Brasiliera de Ciências (Bazil)
Royal Society of Canada
Chinese Academy of Sciences
Academié des Sciences (France)
Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina (Germany)
Indian National Science Academy
Accademia dei Lincei (Italy)
Science Council of Japan
Russian Academy of Sciences
Royal Society (United Kingdom)

Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and the Arts
Caribbean Academy of Sciences
Indonesian Academy of Sciences
Royal Irish Academy
Academy of Sciences Malaysia
Academy Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand
Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

In addition to these national academies, the following institutions specializing in climate, atmosphere, ocean, and/or earth sciences have endorsed these conclusions:

NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS)
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
National Academy of Sciences (NAS)
State of the Canadian Cryosphere (SOCC)
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Royal Society of the United Kingdom (RS)
American Geophysical Union (AGU)
American Institute of Physics (AIP)
National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
American Meteorological Society (AMS)
Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS)

I'll take this "consensus" over the 400 "scientists" handpicked by Sen Inhofe for his minority skeptics report.

Jonny, that's just the sort of hyperbole that has made such a mess of the science in the field of climate study.<em> (I think you are having some satirical fun here, but I will continue on anyway as if your comment were serious)</em>

If we actually are in the 11th hour and on the brink of disaster, then it's too late to do anything at all about it at all.

The truth is that we are just at the beginning of industrialization in most of the world, and as the African, South American and Indo-Chinese continents catch up with the west in their industrialization, pollutants introduced into the ecosphere are going to increase exponentially.

The sooner those in the field of climate study get off the soap-box and back to doing hard science the better for all of mankind.

<em>Your satirical comment got me though - Algore as one word should have clued me in, but alas ... and so you earned yourself a spot on the PoliTech blogroll. I placed your Blog under Humor, but can move it to a more appropriate topic if you desire, let me know.</em>

what is the use of having just a hd dvd compatible console when it has become quite clear that blu ray disc is the new standard in hd.if microsoft can provide its customers with an x-box306 that is compatible with both hd dvd and blu-ray disc at the same price($179) then its competitors like sony will suffer a major blow both in the gaming console department and optical disc player department.

Just adding, for the benefit of others, that I found a post on the Vaio Village forum from a guy who did successfully upgrade an RX470DS to 2GB RDRAM. And I've seen a couple other people who have put in over the (supposed) maximum of 512 in other Vaios in this line.

The BIOS data says there is a PER MODULE limit of 512...but 4 modules. Hmmmm. Could it be that Sony may have just got mixed up & used the per slot limit as the total RAM limit? a mistake back in 2001 that has prevented all these poor Vaio owners from doing an upgrade that is actually possible?

Well, I"ll be stopping by Rambus RDRAM Depot to get some RIMMs for this old antique.

Cool blog, btw

I work with some really high end design software and a lot of that is still really struggling with Vista, but Microsoft will force adoption of course by removing oem XP from system builders in the near future

I too have one of these old PC800 RDRAM PCs, that originally came with Windows Me. And I too ran XP on 128 MB but I put in 512 (128x4) a couple yrs ago... now I really need more but I am dreading migration...so I was interested to see your article.

My Sony VAIO PCV-RX470DS is included on the list from Rambus RDRAM Depot.. BUT the specs I have seen say it has a 512 MB max RAM.

The mb is a Asus WMT-LE. chipset Intel 850

Back when I upgraded to 512 I recall someone saying they thought it could take more, but I didn't at the time pay much attention. Any thoughts? Any experience doing such a revival on these Sony VAIO PCVs with PC800 RDRAM?

Adam, let me explain why Poli made light of your comment.

Wikipedia is like a huge whiteboard that anyone can add to. Even if you have knowledge in some field and have confirmed the page correct at the time you linked to it, I could since have vandalised or added an incorrect statement the page you linked to, and so could hundreds of millions of other Internet users; if you don't have knowledge in that field, you shouldn't even be thinking of citing a source that could have been produced by someone no more knowledgeable than you. Whiteboards are great for throwing ideas together, but they make for awful references.

If you are so lacking in knowledge in some field that don't know where to reference beyond Wikipedia, you probably shouldn't be commentating within that field at all. At the very least, look at source material listed at the bottom of the article. Read these sources, ensure they're in agreement, then cite the one you consider most authoritative. If necessary, use other means to find a better range of sources - a search engine will not selectively list sources to support the biases of the article writer.

Summary: citing Wikipedia is another way of saying "I'm lazy and/or not very knowledgeable on this topic". Either possibility renders your post not worth the time required to read it. Since you might have the seeds of a very good argument, take the time to back it up properly; others will appreciate your effort and begin to recognise your scholarly approach.
